TIBETAN ACUPRESSURE HEAD MASSAGE

‘This treatment is extremely meditative and useful for those who find it difficult to switch off, or suffering from sleeping disorders or mental anxiety. It creates a deep sense of tranquillity and peace.’

Tibetan head massage is a unique therapy which draws on the ancient wisdom and philosophies of Tibetan Ayurveda. The therapy is performed with the client fully clothed in a reclining or lying position and involves massage of the scalp, face, neck, throat, shoulders and upper arms and also includes acupressure. The acupressure points used in this treatment are unique to Tibetan medicine and differ from the better known Chinese meridian or Indian Ayurvedic marma systems.

The aim of the treatment is to make a positive change in the recipient’s energy system with specialised massage techniques to bring about balance and harmony and to support the body’s natural ability to heal its self. In addition, the therapy relieves minor headaches, improves hair condition to the scalp, aids lymphatic drainage, insomnia, and is particularly effective of countering the effects of stress.

In traditional Tibetan medicine, massage was prescribed mainly as a treatment for excess 'wind' disorders, which include stress, anxiety, restlessness, dizziness, unbalanced emotions, depression, muscle cramps and stiffness, backache and insomnia.

During the treatment the recipient is fully clothed and lying on a treatment couch. The therapy involves gentle stroking and kneading techniques over the scalp, face, neck, throat, shoulders and upper arms, using smooth and slow activity to release muscular tension. Slow rhythmic circular movements over the head, face, throat and heart areas charge the body with healing energy. In addition, the treatment of selected acupressure points balances the energies of the body to positively change its energy system. This is a totally different experience to Indian Head Massage, and is particularly suited to those suffering from sleep disorders, mental stress and tension.

The massage strokes traditionally used in Tibetan massage are:

  • Stroking - lengthwise strokes to smooth the wind

  • Circular motion - to charge the body with healing energy

  • Kneading - to release muscular tension

  • Acupressure - to balance the energies of the body
